The Zealand Alps
North of the protected Maglesø lake (about 10 km south of Holbæk) is an impressive ridge, popularly referred to as “The Zealand Alps”. The experience of being in a mountainous landscape becomes particularly clear when you reach the top of Mørkemosebjerg – the highest point in the area (105 m). On a clear day, the view to the north is outstanding.
To the left in the field of view are the hilly landscapes of Odsherred and the drained Lammefjord. Directly to the north, the fjords and inlets of the Isefjord landscape with the city of Holbæk in the foreground are in the field of view, and to the NE, Hornsherred comes into focus. Here it’s the coastal cliffs and Kyndby Power Station that catch the eye.
In the eastern part of the area around Hulsbjerg and Grøntved Sø, the landscape has retained its original character with beautiful elongated lakes in deadfall holes alternating with high grassy plateaus and rolling fields.
Other parts of the “Alps”, on the other hand, are clearly characterized by intensive use in the form of gravel extraction, cottage housing and Christmas tree cultivation.
Maglesø
Maglesø is located in the Zealand Alps, approximately 10 kilometers south of Holbæk.
The lake, which has an area of 13.6 hectares, is located in a very hilly landscape created by dead ice at the end of the last ice age. The highest point is Mørkemosebjerg, 105 meters above sea level, from where you can see Vejrhøj, among others.
It is possible to walk around the entire Maglesø.
Holbæk Museum and old town center
Holbæk Museum consists of 12 unique buildings, the oldest dating from 1660. The museum includes a large collection of Knabstrup pottery, grocery store and farmhouses. In the ArchaeoLab, guests can try the archaeologist’s methods for themselves.
The museum traces its own history back to 1910, when it was established under the name “Folkemuseet for Holbæk og omliggende Herreder”. In 1911, the museum opens to the public in the monastery building at Nikolai Church. The first items include a hymnal from 1807, a triangular hat and a wooden bishop’s scale. In 1919, the museum moves to newly renovated premises in Søren Mays Gaard (Klosterstræde 16 and the back building). Since then, more buildings have been added, housing around 250,000 objects that tell the history of Holbæk.
